Farmers: Product of the Farm or Cottage Food or License?

Most food sold in Minnesota requires a license ... unless ... it qualifies as an "exclusion" from licensing like Product of the Farm; or an "exemption" from licensing like Cottage Food. Farmers are in a unique position in that they can select either category, depending on the food they are selling. This zoominar explains the differences between POTF and CF; and if a license is required, how to obtain one and from which agency.

MFMA provides services, programs, and leadership that support and promote farmers' markets across Minnesota and our Tribal Nations.

We envision a community of vibrant, profitable, and professionally managed Minnesota farmers’ markets that:

                    • Cultivates, nourishes, and inspires a vibrant local foods community;
                    • Provides accessibility to all to local farm fresh foods;
                    • Allows local food producers to thrive and grow;
                    • Ensures these opportunities are available to everyone regardless of ethnicity, age, gender identity, or economic standing.
